The household favorite daddy long legs is commonly mistaken for a highly venomous spider. There is a persistent myth that it is deadly, born from rumors that it can hunt and kill notorious spiders like the black widow.
In reality, the true daddy long legs - properly called a harvestman - does not possess any venom at all. Furthermore, it is entirely distinct from true spiders. A harvestman has only two eyes instead of the typical spider's six or eight, is completely unable to produce silk or spin webs, and its head and body are fused into one solid segment, whereas spiders have a distinct waist separating their body parts.
The harvestman is a member of the arachnid class, a broad group that also includes scorpions and other eight-legged creatures that aren't technically spiders.
In households, the harvestman is frequently confused with the cellar spider, which looks remarkably similar due to its long, spindly legs and habit of lounging around corners. The cellar spider, however, is a true spider. It can be easily distinguished from a harvestman by its two distinct body segments and its ability to spin the messy, tangled webs where it is usually found.
So, if it looks like a daddy long legs but is sitting in a web with a body clearly split into two parts, it is actually a cellar spider - which does have venom, though it is incredibly weak and entirely harmless to humans.
